“Culture Smart Dominican Republic – An Essential Guide to Customs and Culture”, by Ilana Benady and the late Ginnie Bedggood, both longtime British residents in the DR, gives the visitor and newcomer essential information about the country, and the authors hoped it would prevent many all-too common socio-linguistic gaffes and misunderstandings.

The book is available from major bookstores in the US, Canada and the UK, the main online book retailers like Amazon and locally from Paper Moon Books, in Punta Cana Village. It is part of an international series of more than 80 Culture Smart Guides by British publishing house Kuperard together with US publisher Random House.

Sadly, Ginnie Bedggood, a retired sociology lecturer who lived in Puerto Plata for over 17 years, passed away before she could see the fruits of her labour, a reflection of her great love, respect and admiration for her adopted country and its people.

Ilana Benady, who has lived in the DR for more than 12 years, is an anthropolpogy graduate with more than 20 of communications and development work in Latin America and the Caribbean. Based in Punta Cana, she is married to well-known Dominican photojournalist Pedrito Guzmán, who took the cover photo and several of the inside illustrations.
