According to Travelers Digest , the Dominican Republic ranks number # 1 among the 10 most visited Caribbean island of 2014, and there’s no doubt that a large majority of these visitors head straight to Punta Cana. The Punta Cana (PUJ) airport is responsible for receiving around 60% of all visitors to the Dominican Republic making it the most popular for travelers to the island.

The Punta Cana International airport (PUJ) is the second largest airport hub in the Caribbean, the third busiest airport in the Caribbean. In it’s first year of operations the Punta Cana airport received a total of 3,893 passengers; today the airport serves around 5.1 million passengers on an annual basis. The PUJ airport already had the ability to take in millions of travelers a year. But on November 1, 2014 the airport opened a brand new terminal to accommodate millions more visitors.

Terminal B, is a brand new 333,000 square foot, cpr call blocker unblock three story, state of the art addition has the capacity to accommodate 6,500 travelers daily. That’s an estimated 2 million additional travelers annually. The new terminal is said to be a modern adaptation of airports, and designed to alleviate some of the headaches that come with traveling through airports. Some these designs include 50 ticketing counters, a play area for kids, power stations for phones and electronics, duty free shopping and an improved food courts.

For visitors who really wanted to travel in style, the terminal also includes VIP services available, which include a plane-side greetings, and being whisked through those pesky security and immigration lines. VIP passengers on their way out of Punta Cana can also enjoy skipping the lines at the airport and wait in the special VIP lounge until their flight’s departure.

The new terminal is a great addition to what is an already very unique airport. The Punta Cana International Airport is the world’s first and most successful privately built, owned, and managed international airport; and it’s the only privately owned airport in the Western Hemisphere. It was built in 1984, by the Grupo Puntacana in a joint venture with Club Med, two of the main founders and developers of the Punta Cana area. The founders understoodthat the only way to develop tourism in the area was to bring the tourist straight into the area, and they have had wild success.

The PUJ airport has been an international travel hub ever since, and has had a significant role in the growth and the development of the area. It should be exciting to see what this new area of Terminal B has in store for Punta Cana.
